Residents and school children are set to learn new skills, gain hands-on work experience and benefit from community schemes under a new “Tottenham Charter” launched by Haringey Council.
Haringey Council and local partners – including charities, businesses and housing developers – have each committed to playing their part in guaranteeing residents can make the most of the benefits that regeneration will bring to the area, ranging from jobs and training to health improvements.
The Tottenham Charter will go hand-in-hand with the council’s ambitious regeneration plans, which will see the delivery of thousands of new homes, jobs and facilities during the next 20 years.
The Charter has a focus on improving education and training; creating jobs and business opportunities, and building strong and healthy communities. Pledges already made include:
- Volker Fitzpatrick: A STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths STEM engagement programme with local schools, including work experience placements
- Redemption Brewery Co: work experience opportunities
- Lee Valley Estates: schools engagement and measures to help young people classed as NEET (not in employment, education or training) on the Hale Village development.
- Grainger: a programme of activities with Gladesmore School
- Arup: building links with Northumberland Park School.
- The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation: work with the local community to tackle key social issues including health and wellbeing, education and training
The council is working with other businesses to secure further pledges.
Haringey Council Leader, Cllr Claire Kober, said:
“The Tottenham Charter underlines our commitment to ensuring that the regeneration of Tottenham is about so much more than bricks and mortar – it is a real opportunity to improve quality of life for thousands of residents.
“By making these pledges, companies and organisations at the forefront of Tottenham’s regeneration are playing their part in ensuring local residents get the very best of social and economic opportunities – whether through taking up an apprenticeship, enjoying improved health facilities or leisure activities, or even gaining the skills to set up their own business.”
Jonathan Kiddle, Senior Development Manager at Grainger said:
“Grainger is delighted to be one of the first companies to sign up to the Tottenham Charter, an excellent initiative that we are very pleased to support.
“We are very much looking forward to forming a long lasting partnership with Gladesmore Community School and will assist them as they continue to provide an outstanding all round education to current and future pupils.”
