The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide said on Thursday that there are big issues that still have to be solved in the framework of the ongoing Cyprus talks.
“I had a comprehensive and good conversation with Mr Anastasiades” Eide told the press after meeting President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades on Thursday, adding that they discussed about the leaders` meeting scheduled for Friday, based on the negotiators` meetings and the committees` meetings in the previous weeks.
“I actually have not very much news to say because first I respect that the leaders lead the process” he said.
“We are working on a long series of issues and I think there`s a sense now that we have a number of understandings but we will eventually need to take them down to be even clearer on what are the outstanding issues” he noted.
“As we know there are big issues that still have to be solved” Eide explained.
He also said that the territorial readjustments as well as security and guarantees will come at the end of the process and “we are not at the end of the process”, in response to a question about Morphou.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof, resumed last May.
