A British woman was killed and her husband is in hospital with serious injuries after their car was crushed by a crane on the town’s Phoinikoudes promenade late on Wednesday evening.
The 50 metre crane, that was being used for work on the town hall, fell on to three cars in strong winds during heavy storms in Larnaca.
The couple, who are reported to be permanent residents of Cyprus, were trapped in their car. A private crane was brought in to help fire officers free the couple. They were taken to hospital were the woman, aged 65, succumbed to her injuries soon after.
The crane fell across busy Athenon Avenue, with officials saying the town was lucky there were not more people out and about because of the bad weather..
