A vision to make walking, cycling and public transport the first choice for travel in Haringey is at the heart of the council’s ambitious new transport strategy.
The strategy, approved by cabinet last night (Tuesday March 6), sets out our aims to improve the borough’s road and transport network between now and 2026.
It includes:
- Creating streets that make it easier to get round the borough on a bike, on foot or by using public transport
- Lobbying for and helping to create a public transport network that is better connected, has greater capacity and is more accessible
- Making our road network less congested and even safer
- Improving air quality by reducing the carbon emissions produced by transport
The strategy will help to shape future plans for road and accessibility improvements, as well as support ambitious plans for housing and growth in the borough.
It also paves the way for four more action plans that will set out in more detail how the council will achieve these goals. These are a walking and cycling action plan; a parking plan; the sustainable transport and travel action plan, which among other things sets out proposals for road maintenance, and the Local Improvement Plan, which demonstrates how the council will meet the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.
Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Environment Cllr Peter Mitchell said:
“This strategy is vital to the work we do to make Haringey a cleaner, greener and healthier borough to live and work in. We are serious about getting people out of their cars and taking more journeys on foot, by bike or by public transport. We will now start working, together with transport and cycling groups and other partners in our community, on detailed action plans to make this happen.”
