The Government considers as unacceptable Turkey`s action to send a Note Verbale to the UN Secretary General with regard to the so-called agreement for the delineation of a continental shelf between Turkey and the island’s Turkish occupied areas.
Speaking at the Presidential Palace, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said that the Government considers as unacceptable and condemns unequivocally Turkey’s action, adding that “the Note Verbale, dated 10 April 2014, to the Secretary General of the United Nations, which a press report today refers to, concerns the submission of the geographical coordinates of what Turkey considers to be its own continental shelf and the continental shelf of the self-styled state, (the illegal secessionist regime in the areas of the Republic Turkey occupies since 1974) in the maritime area between the northern coast of the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey.”
He added that the Note Verbale refers to the so-called ‘Agreement of Delineation’ between Turkey and the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime, which was ratified by Turkey through Law 6344, dated 29 June 2012. That is to say, it has to do with the so-called ‘agreement of delineation of continental shelf’ that was signed in New York between Turkey and the secessionist entity on 21 September 2011.
Christodoulides pointed out that “the ‘agreement’ does not have any legal validity in the international legal order and it is therefore legally nonexistent and invalid.”
“It is worth noting the moment in time that Turkey has chosen to send the Note Verbale in question to the Secretary General of the United Nations. The Government considers this action unacceptable and condemns it unequivocally. This is an action that also takes place in the midst of negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem, which, undoubtedly, are affected in a negative way”, the
Spokesman stressed.
The submission of this illegal ‘agreement’ by Turkey to the United Nations is being investigated by the Permanent Mission of the Republic in New York, and the Government is taking all the necessary action in order to prevent the creation of new, illegal faits accomplis.
