Two injured in Cyprus football brawl

Police in Paphos are investigating the events that led to the injury of two footballers who suffered head injuries following a mass brawl during a match in Chlorakas on Sunday.

According to investigators, the non-league football match between AEN Chlorakas and Chrysomilias Ayios Amvrosios was stopped by the referee at around 5.15pm when players and officials from both sides got involved in a brawl at the 3,500-seater Chlorakas Community Stadium.

Two footballers were rushed to Paphos General Hospital where one player, said to be 37-years-old, was treated for a fractured cheekbone at the Emergency Unit while another player, 39, was treated for concussion and released later that night.

Both men were players of host team AEN Chlorakas. Police in Paphos are still investigating.

Acts of hooliganism and violence are no strangers to sport in Cyprus with police struggling to curb the problem, particularly at major games on the island.

Two months ago, referee Marios Panagi told police of a corruption ring working within the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) rigging local matches.

Police have yet to charge file charges against any suspects.
