UEFA monitors developments in Cyprus football

UEFA Vice President Marios Lefkaritis said Tuesday that the European governing body of football is monitoring what’s happening in Cyprus football and is concerned about the latest developments.

Invited to to comment on the latest developments in the Cyprus Football, Lefkaritis said the briefing of UEFA “may come from various sources but UEFA has also direct contact with the Cyprus Football Association (CFA). ”

“UEFA monitors the situations, is updated from various sources and concerned, but doesn’t stop from being represented in Cyprus by the CFA,” he added.

Lefkaritis also opposed the call of some sports clubs in Cyprus for the creation of a League in football. He also wondered why there’s a need to create a League since CFA already exists. Lefkaritis said that nothing will be achieved by creating a League and added that all 14 football clubs were represented in CFA.

Cyprus referees decided Monday to boycott all local matches, after a bomb attack on the house of referee Thomas Mouskos`s mother in Limassol. According to the police the referee`s mother was not hurt because she was in an upstairs bedroom. Mouskos`s received threats over his performance during a match between Apollon and Othellos on 12 January.

The attack follows allegations of match-fixing by local referee Marios Panayi.
