UK Cypriot teenager struck and killed by train at Potters Bar rail station inquest

Joshua Kyriacou, who lived with his mother in Potters Bar, died on December 6 last year when he was struck by a 115mph train at Potters Bar train station.

The court heard he had no record of mental health issues, and toxicology reports revealed nothing of significance.

Mr Kyriacou’s mother was not at the inquest, and a British Transport Police investigator said officers were concerned about her well-being and had submitted a safeguarding form.

“Her reaction to the sympathy message, her failure to interact with police, with the coroner’s office, with the funeral arrangements, did cause us concern,” she told the court.

A present relative protested that more should be done to investigate Mr Kyriacou’s family situation, but senior coroner Geoffrey Sullivan echoed the BTP conclusion that further concerns should be reported to Herts Police.

Mr Reed told Hatfield’s Old Courthouse that he had known Mr Kyriacou since he was two years old and they had become close friends.

Following a site investigation, the court was told that Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway were in the process of installing additional security at all stations south of Stevenage.

After the inquest, Mr Reed a friend of Joshua told the WHT: “He was a really nice kid, really intelligent, and could have gone a long way.
