The UK Government has commended the efforts of President Anastasiades and Mr Akinci in seeking a settlement over the Cyprus issue, with a statement issued on Monday evening on the occasion of the completion of 41 years since the tragic events of 20th July 1974.
A Foreign Office spokesperson told the Cyprus News Agency that “the UK recognises the tragic events that have afflicted Cyprus in the past. But,” said the spokesperson, “we are now focused on the future, supporting the people and leaders of Cyprus in seizing this opportunity to build a lasting peace.
“As President Anastasiades has said, `[both sides] need to move forward by consensus with respect for history`. The Government commends the efforts of both him and Mr Akinci in seeking to do that.”
