Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said that the UK’s contribution to efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue and to agree to a joint communique between the leaders of the two communities ahead of the resumption of talks consists in its discrete position.
“This position leaves the freedom of movement to the sides involved and doesn’t make them feel that they are under pressure or under of the sword of Damocles of third parties,” Kasoulides told reporters in London, where he accompanies President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades οn his visit.
The Foreign Minister added that «the UK compiles the initial draft of the UN resolutions and always supports them – it would be strange if didn’t support in this case the content of resolution 1251.”
Commenting on a journalist’s observation that many expect the Security Council report immediately after the conclusion of President Anastasides’ meetings in London and asked whether this was a coincidence, Foreign Minister Kasoulides said that “it may be a coincidence that nothing has happened until the visit to London concludes. But,” he added, “I think the report will be an oral one, by Mr Downer to the Security Council and then there will be the composition of the first draft resolution and the vote on it by the end of the month. We are ready for all eventualities.”
Kasoulides also referred to his meeting with the Commonwealth Minister Hugo Swire. They discussed the need to bridge the gap between developed and developing Commonwealth member countries. The Cypriot Foreign Minister has become a member of the Commonwealth’s Action Group on the Harare Declaration, which relates to the respect of law, democracy and human rights.
