UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon`s report on the UN peace keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is expected to be handed over to the UN Security Council members on Monday or Tuesday.
According to well informed sources, the report will be technical in its part referring to UNFICYP. It will also include a chapter on the Secretary General`s good offices mission, that will refer to the events that followed the issuing of the joint statement by the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, on February 11 this year.
UN officials have assured that the report will be objective, without any particular recommendations by the Secretary General, apart from those already expressed – the need to seize the opportunity to settle the Cyprus problem and the need for the two leaders to show political will.
Deliberations by the five Security Council permanent members are not expected to begin before July 10, while the plenary session to adopt the relevant resolution has been scheduled for July 30.
Cyprus has been divided since the Turkish military invasion in the summer of 1974. A fresh round of UN-led talks, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof, began after the joint statement issued by Anastasiades and Eroglu
