Four people were arrested in the north following a bizarre attack against a hotel in Kyrenia, and according to media speculation, ISIS is behind the attack in an effort to extort money by trying to sell mafia-like protection to hotels and casinos.
According to Turkish Cypriot press, on Monday four people were remanded for two days in connection with the case.
Despite a very tight security operation and no leaks to the press, daily Kibris Postasi speculated on rumours over the last month that have ISIS trying to “sell protection” to effectively put under their control a number of hotel and casino resorts.
On Sunday, according to Cyprus News Agency, 51 bullets were fired against Savoy hotel in Kyrenia around 2:30 in the morning. The bullets came from a Kalashnikov rifle, which has upset many people. However, nobody was injured and it is believed the attack was a careful message directly aimed at hotel owners in the occupied north.
