The US Capitol is on lockdown in Washington DC after shots were fired on Saturday afternoon.
A statement from Washington police said the suspected shooter had been “neutralized” but the area was being locked down as a precautionary measure.
Police said the shooter shot him or herself.
Police are also investigating a suspicious package found on the lower west terrace of the Capitol building, the statement said.
“Confirmed: self-inflicted gunshot by neutralized subject,” Capital Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said. It is not clear whether the person is alive or dead.
Congress is not in session, so there are few lawmakers in town.
However, the sunny weather and the annual Cherry Blossom festival attracted crowds of tourists.
