US expresses support to EuroAsia Interconnector

The US is supportive of connecting distribution grids of mainland Europe to Cyprus and Israel via the EuroAsia Interconnector, a State Department Spokesperson has said.

Responding to a question the spokesperson said that this “is a cost-effective & flexible route that can be used not only for electricity but as a platform to deploy other renewable energy sources.”

The spokesperson added that the US “supports all efforts to reduce tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

“We welcome the resumption of exploratory talks between Greece and Turkey in Athens and the commitment of both governments to this process,” he noted.

Cyprus, Israel and Greece signed on March 8, 2021 a Memorandum of Understanding taking another step towards connecting the electricity grids via the EuroAsia Interconnector, a 1,208-kilometre 2,000 MW capacity subsea HVDC cable.
