A resolution requesting that the US Congress and the United Nations work together towards finding a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem was introduced on Wednesday by State of Rhode Island Senators Raptakis, Doyle, Paiva Weed, Algiere, and Gallo.
“We respectfully request that the President of the United States and the United States Congress fully support all United Nations efforts to create a peaceful and democratic solution that will be based on European law and will guarantee all Cypriot citizens equal human rights,” the resolution said.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu reached on February 11 an agreement, which led to the resumption of peace talks to reunite the country under a federal roof.
