Various scenarios have been prepared regarding possible new support measures due to the situation in the region, Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said on Friday.
In statements at the Presidential Palace, following the meeting of the President of the Republic with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Khassim Diagne, and when asked whether the government would extend the measures announced on Thursday, if the crisis persists, the Spokesperson noted that this is something the President of the Republic himself has already stated, that various scenarios have been prepared.
“Various scenarios have been prepared precisely because at this stage we do not know the duration, the intensity, or the depth that this crisis will have, nor its impact on energy prices or the prices of goods. There is a range of measures which, if necessary, will be activated,” he added.
He noted that the Republic of Cyprus is in a position to adopt these measures and to develop “this highly targeted planning, precisely because public finances allow it, and because strong economic fundamentals constitute the basic prerequisite.”
President Christodoulides announced on Thursday a package of eight measures across sectors including electricity, fuel, VAT on food, agriculture, transport and tourism to support households and businesses. In a televised message following a Cabinet meeting, the President said that economic stability constitutes national security and warned that profiteering would not be tolerated. The total cost of the measures, including those already in force, exceeds €200 million, he said.
