Waste management still a problem for Cyprus, European Environment official says

European Environment Agency (EEA) Executive Director Hans Bruyninckx told Cypriot MPs on Wednesday that waste management continues to be a serious problem for Cyprus, while the country should also effectively deal with challenges such as renewable energy sources.

Addressing the parliamentary environment committee in the presence of Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) students Bruynickx who is visiting Cyprus said that the vision now is to increase the use of renewable energy sources and to reduce carbon emissions by 2050.

“It is necessary to have a long-term investment policy,” he pointed out, noting that it is not a good thing for different governments to change policy on the matter.

He sent a positive message for the creation of new jobs and competitiveness.

Referring to his Agency`s priorities he said that the work done today focuses on the 2020 strategy, that the next goal will be 2030 and that planning is already underway for the 2050 vision.

In order to have results it is imperative to have well planned policies and solid implementation, Bruyninckx said, pointing out that policies need to be ambitious.
