We are concerned by Turkey’s plan B for Cyprus

The Mayor of the Turkish occupied town of Morphou Victoras Hadjiavraam has said that refugees are worried and very scared about Turkey’s plan B` with regard to the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.

The Mayor was speaking to the media after a meeting which the Morphou Municipal Council and a delegation of members of the European Parliament who attended the Morphou anti-occupation rally had on Monday with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades.

This is not just a statement being made in the framework of a political game, but it has already entered into force, Hadjiavraam said, recalling that the occupation regime had prohibited Greek Cypriot pilgrims to visit the church of Ayios Mamas in Morphou on September 1st and 2nd, and now it has decided to impose “taxes” on goods the UN delivers to the enclaved. Hadjiavraam also spoke about an effort to islamize Cyprus` occupied areas.

He stressed that not any solution, but a solution that will be just and viable must be found immediately, adding that “we are losing time.”.

He said that during the meeting with President Anastasiades they looked into the developments that took place during the negotiations on Cyprus in Crans Montana, in July this year.

Hadjiavraam said that any effort for a settlement will take place after the presidential elections in Cyprus. He said that foreign officials who participated in the municipality`s anti-occupation events will help to the extent they can so that pressure is exerted on Turkey.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. The latest round of UN-backed negotiations, in early July 2017 in Crans – Montana, Switzerland, ended inconclusively
