Weather conditions will improve from New Year’s Eve, says Met Department

The third wave of severe weather that affected Cyprus will gradually subside from New Year’s Eve, according to the Director of the Department of Meteorology, Filippos Tymvios.

He told CNA that the front appears to be shifting toward the center of the island. During the previous days, the western and southwestern areas were more severely impacted.

Tymvios said on Monday there is a possibility of thunderstorms with hail inland and snowfall in the mountainous areas. He noted that the severity of the bad weather will not match that of the past days, so the amount of rainfall is expected to be lower.

He further added that from Tuesday onward, although the weather will remain intermittently cloudy with a chance of isolated showers, the severe weather conditions will gradually recede. It is expected that during the first two days of the new year, there will be sunshine and a gradual rise in temperature to seasonal averages, without any significant weather phenomena.

“Climatologically speaking, we expect January to also be rainy, close to normal levels, based on our long-term predictions”, he said, adding, however, that accurate predictions right now can only be made up to Thursday, January 2
