Windy weather increases weekend call outs

High winds battered the Capital and led to the Brigade receiving numerous weather related calls yesterday afternoon.

Between 12.00pm and 6.30pm, firefighters attended around 30 incidents related to the windy weather, including scaffolding in a precarious position and fallen trees.

At 12.11pm crews were called to Brick Lane, Spitalfields, when part of a roof that was under construction fell to the floor injuring two people.

Firefighters attended Langhorne Road, Leytonstone, where part of a block of flats’ roof had fallen on to cars.

Other incidents attended included:

• A tree in a precarious position on Countess Close, Uxbridge. • Scaffolding in a precarious position on Claredale Street, Bethnal Green. • Dislodged roof panel on a block of flats on Sparkes Close, Bromley. • Sheeting come away from scaffolding on Lawrence Road, Tottenham. • Scaffolding in a precarious position on Edgware Road, Paddington. • A single sheet of plastic detached from canopy roof on Marshall Road, Leyton. • Loose timber shuttering on Wenlock Road, Hoxton. • Scaffolding boards in a precarious position on Rye Lane, Peckham Rye.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Firefighters are always on hand should any buildings, hoardings or scaffolding be left in a precarious position and posing a risk to life because of high winds.

“To help stay safe during windy weather people should always clear gardens, balconies and window sills of anything that could be blown away. They should also take extra care if they venture outside and be careful using candles in the case of a power cut.”
