“Cyprus’ new roadmap”

In a commentary title: “Cyprus’ new roadmap”, in Turkish daily Sabah (05.07.12), columnist Mahmut Ovur reports on the meeting he held last week in occupied Lefkosia with the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu during a luncheon that Eroglu gave to several Turkish diplomatic correspondents from Turkey and writes that Eroglu determined during the meeting, the launching of a new era in Cyprus.

According to Ovur, commenting on the Republic of Cyprus’ and the EU presidency, Eroglu said that a new era has begun with the “Greek Cypriot administrations’” EU presidency, and explained the following: “The negotiations continue now for exactly 6 years. We became stronger with the Annan Plan, but still due to the wrong stance of Mehmet Ali Talat and his team; it was not possible for this chance to turn to an occasion. Of course, because of the Greek Cypriot side, the EU did not approach the solution. Now, we have in front of us the 6 months EU presidency of the Greek Cypriot side and later on the presidential elections in the Greek Cypriot side. So, the non-solution will continue for at least one year”.

Pointing out that nobody, including Turkey, does not in fact feel uncomfortable with the non-solution which is experienced in Cyprus, Ovur supports that first of all, some EU countries such as the UK, France and Germany, as well as the USA and Russia, are in favour of the continuation of the situation of the “non-solution”.

Turkey is not uneasy as well for this, writes the columnist, because of the fact that the EU did not fulfil its promises.

“Taking action in the framework of these realities, Eroglu says that their only goal now: ‘Is the lifting of isolation’”, writes the columnist.

The columnist asking the Turkish Cypriot leader, Dervis Eroglu what the Turkish Cypriot side will do after the EU if they did not fulfill its promises to the Turkish Cypriots, Eroglu explained what is their new roadmap: “We will still continue exerting pressure to the EU, but what is really necessary for us to do is to turn our direction to other areas and the Islam countries. This is our goal”.
