The District Committee (DC) of AKEL in Britain at its meeting on Monday 25 February 2019 was updated on the current political situation in Britain and the new state of affairs in the Houses of Parliament.
After a serious discussion and taking into account the strong dissatisfaction which exists in our community in relation to the political events of last week and the possible effect on the Cyprus problem the DC agreed on the following statement.
- AKEL in Britain expresses its full respect for and dedication to democracy and democratic processes as expressed through popular elections.
- We express our disappointment with the withdrawal / break- away of Members of Parliament from the Labour Party’s numerical parliamentary force. Their actions contribute to the weakening of the progressive forces which today can bring about the change of the current Conservative government something which the country desperately needs.
- We firmly believe that the democratic and principled thing to do is for the break-away Members of Parliament to resign their seats and facilitate by – elections in their constituencies.
- We hope and we will demand from the Members of Parliament who left their political Party and who worked and contributed for the solution and reunification of Cyprus on the basis of the United Nations resolutions and High-Level agreements for a Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation that they will continue to do so from their new position.
- We express our support to the Labour Party and its leader Jeremy Corbyn in their efforts to preserve unity in their party and the wider working class movement so that they bring about the progressive change that the people are crying out for.
