A column capital, believed to be part of a pre-Christian church, built in the area where the church of Ayia Thekla stands in Sotira village, in Famagusta district, was brought to light by a bulldozer digging a ditch during restoration work at the church.
Priest Georgios Ioannou said that as soon as the column capital was uncovered, the officer responsible for the excavations at the Antiquities Department was notified and verified the importance of the cultural heritage in this area.
He noted that the Antiquities Department assured them that it will begin excavations around the church to discover any other archaeological artifacts.
