Australian and UK Cypriots mourn the loss of popular Stavros Economou

Stavros Economou sadly passed away on Thursday 1st February 2018 in Southend at the age of 89. He leaves behind ten children: Sam, Mary, Jack, Perri, Chris, Anthea, Andrew, Connie, Michael and Helen. 19 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Born 29th February 1929 in Aradippou, Cyprus in a family of five; three brothers and two sisters. He immigrated to Australia in December 1951 with his beloved wife Stavroulla then settled in England in 1972 until 1999 when he returned back to his native Cyprus.

In the 1950’s it would take two months to travel to Australia from Cyprus so it was an amazing feat to just get there. Stavros first lived and worked on a Sugar Cane Plantation in Cairns, Australia. From there he moved and settled with his growing family in Brisbane where he eventually opened up milk bars, grocery shops and fish and chip shops.

It was there also where his love of football continued and he became the goalkeeper of Hellenic FC who were one of the most successful teams in Brisbane and now play under the name of Olympic FC.

In 1972 he came to England where again he had fish and chips and grocery shops and was well known within our community..

Stavros Economou was also a founder member of the KOPA League and Chairman of AEKON who were the first team to win the league and cup double in the first season of the KOPA League in 1975.

The funeral will take place in Cyprus
