Barnet councillor charged with assaulting Cypriot woman

CONSERVATIVE councillor Brian Coleman has been charged with assaulting a woman in Finchley High Road last month.

The Totteridge councillor is accused of attacking Cypriot Helen Michael on Thursday, September 20 following an altercation outside Cafe Buzz, which is owned by Ms Michael. He was arrested later that day.

Police officers have now confirmed Mr Coleman has been charged with assault by beating and driving a mechanically propelled vehicle on a public place without reasonable consideration.

He has been bailed to appear before Hendon Magistrates’ Court on November 5.
Mr Coleman lost his Camden and Barnet Greater London Assembly seat to Labour’s Andrew Dismore on May 4 this year, and a week later was replaced as cabinet member for environment by Tory councillor Dean Cohen.

He is now chairman of the budget and performance overview and scrutiny committee.

Mr Coleman was unavailable for comment at time of publication.

A council spokeswoman said: “The council is aware that Councillor Brian Coleman has been charged with criminal offences and is due to appear before Hendon Magistrates court on November 5 2012.

The matter is therefore subject to judicial process and it would not be appropriate for the council to make any further comment that could be prejudicial to that process.

“Councillor Coleman continues as a ward councillor, his committee membership and chairmanship is a matter for full council.”
