British-born Cypriots rush to get Cypriot citizenship

There has been a dramatic surge from second and third generation Cypriots living in Britain applying for Cypriot citizenship following the Brexit vote in the UK’s EU referendum earlier this year.
This has been confirmed by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides in a letter to Greens MP Giorgos Perdikis on Monday.
The Cyprus’s High Commission in London has informed all those interested in making an application, in the legislation which governs the acquisition of Cypriot citizenship and guides them accordingly.
One of the prerequisites in obtaining Cypriot citizenship is the submission of a birth certificate issued and certified ‘Apostilled’ by the British authorities.
The High Commission has not received any complaints with the regards to the process involved, although there have been isolated cases of people that have mistakenly believed that they could acquire a Cypriot passport through origin alone and without first obtaining Cypriot citizenship.
As stated on the Cyprus High Commission official website, all Cypriot Citizens are eligible for a Republic of Cyprus passport. Persons wishing to apply for a Republic of Cyprus passport must apply in person to the Consulate General in London – 13 St James’ Square, SW1Y 4LB.
They must have with them the following documentation:
– Republic of Cyprus Birth Certificate (photocopies are not accepted);
– Cyprus National Identity Card (photocopies are not accepted);
– Certificate of Citizenship – where applicable – (photocopies are not accepted);
– A Marriage Certificate (in the case of married women);
– Police Report (in case of lost passport).
Applicants are obliged to submit any further documentation requested by the Consular Officers.
Fee is the equivalent of €70.00.
Children under the age of 18 can also apply for a Cypriot passport at the High Commission but must be accompanied by both parents. If the parents are divorced the consent of both parents is required or a Family Court Decision for parental care if necessary.
Fee is the equivalent of €45.00.
