Cyprus and Russia sign protocol on economic cooperation

Cyprus and Russia reviewed their economic cooperation on Tuesday during the 10th Summit of the Cyprus-Russia Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation, in Nicosia, which concluded with the signing of a Protocol that outlines the possibilities and prospects to further expand the cooperation between the two countries in a number of fields.

The Protocol was signed by the Cypriot Minister of Finance Harris Georgiades and the Russian Deputy Minister of Economic Development Alexey V. Gruzdev.

The meeting also prepared the forthcoming visit of Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades to the Russian capital.

This is an important institution that contributes to the broadening of relations between the two countries in all the fields of cooperation, Georgiades told the press after the signing of the Protocol, describing Russia as an extremely important partner for Cyprus.

“Cypriot exports mainly of services, tourism, transport and financial services exceed €1.3 billion” he said, adding that Russia is also an important political partner for Cyprus.

“We had the opportunity today to discuss all these aspects of cooperation and to sign a Protocol that outlines both the possibilities and the prospects to further expand cooperation and at the same time we had the opportunity to prepare substantially the upcoming visit of President Anastasiades to the Russian capital, in just a few weeks from today”.

Russian Deputy Minister of Economic Development Alexey V. Gruzdev spoke of a very fruitful meeting and a very good preparation for the forthcoming visit of the President of the Republic of Cyprus to Russia.

“We had a fruitful discussion of all these fields of cooperation between Russia and Cyprus and there is no doubt that Russia and Cyprus are strategic partners in terms of trading goods, services and investment” he noted.

“And we tried to discuss how to facilitate and further develop cooperation in different fields, including innovations, industrial cooperation, medical services, transport, telecom, IT, and we have presented certain projects in order to facilitate this cooperation” he said.

Reliable sources have told the CNA that the Cyprus-Russia Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation creates opportunities for substantial expansion of the economic relations and prospects for investments.

The same sources specifically referred to an investment of tens of millions of euros for the building of a medical centre for cancer in Cyprus. The investment “proceeds very well” the source noted, adding that Cyprus will be a regional centre for the provision of specialized medical services.
