Cyprus to protest to the EU against provocative circular by Turkish PM

The Republic of Cyprus will protest to the EU over a circular issued by Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan to Turkish technocrats and diplomats, asking them not to take part in any EU meetings that will be chaired by the Cyprus EU Presidency.

Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said here today the circular constituted a provocation towards the EU and the Republic of Cyprus, noting that the EU must react and send its own messages to Turkey for this unacceptable approach.

“This circular is first and foremost a provocation to the EU and of course to the Republic of Cyprus,” Stefanou noted.

He added that Cyprus assumes from July onwards the Presidency of the Council of the EU and noted that any Turkish actions in the direction of freezing relations with the EU Presidency, constitute a provocation and an insult against the EU itself.

Such action comes from a country that wants to join the bloc, the Government Spokesman concluded.
