The sequel to the 1988 cult classic sees Eddie Murphy’s character, Prince Akeem Joffer, set to become King of Zamunda, with his father King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones) ailing.
Intending to strengthen the dynasty and his family’s place as leaders of Zamunda, Akeem heads back to Queens, New York, with his sidekick Semmi (Arsenio Hall) when he discovers he has a son, Lavelle, he never knew he fathered – a prince of Zamunda who can take the throne under its male-rulers-only laws. Complicating matters is Akeem’s eldest daughter, Meeka, who has been preparing to be ruler her whole life.
Director Craig Brewer reunites much of the original cast and brings in new faces including KiKi Layne as Princess Meeka, Jermaine Fowler as Lavelle, Leslie Jones as his mother Mary, and Wesley Snipes as General Izzi, ruler of neighbouring nation Nexdoria.
There are cameos from Hollywood star Morgan Freeman, singers En Vogue, Salt-N-Pepa, Gladys Knight and Davido, and former NBA star Dikembe Mutombo. John Legend appears during a mid-credits sequence singing She’s Your Queen to Be, which Paul Bates sang in the original.
Coming 2 America is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
