The Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round 3rd September 2016 Coles Park
Haringey Borough’s run in this season’s FA Cup only consisted of two games after losing comprehensively to Witham Town at home on Saturday. Which, after the result against Maldon was a big disappointment to another healthy crowd in attendance.
The game started slow and patchy with chances few and far between. Haringey did have the first real attempt on 10 minutes, when a Dan Aristidou free kick was punched out by Witham’s Lewis Snelgrave to Josh Willer on the edge of the penalty area and his volley was cleared off the line.
The game settled into a midfield battle with Witham having a slight upper hand, but Haringey did have the next chance when Jorge Djassi-Sambu’s effort on 32 minutes was also cleared off the line with the Witham goalkeeper nowhere.
The next 15 minutes were a nightmare for Haringey. On 35 minutes Witham’s first shot on target resulted in a fine save by Austin Byfield, but 5 minutes later the defence was breached when Nathan Korenteng’s left foot shot somehow found its way into the net.
Two minutes later Witham scored again. This time Lewis Payne’s volley dipped and swerved and hit the back of the net with Byfield beaten. To finish the half off and effectively the game Witham’s Korenteng ran on to a long through ball for his second and Witham’s third.
The second half was pretty much a carbon copy of the first but without the goals. Haringey tried chasing the game but Witham were not going to surrender a 3 goal advantage.
Aristidou, Willer and Kwabena “Nana” Asamoah all had chances, Nana’s hitting the crossbar, but then Witham also hit the crossbar and Byfield had to deal smartly a few times.
The final whistle went and Witham had deserved their win to progress to the 2nd Qualifying round. Haringey can now concentrate on the league. First with a game on Monday against Aveley (19.45 ko), then on Saturday versus Thurrock (15.00 ko) both at Coles Park.
