Eroglu must give up his ‘Denktash’ ideals

Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides has called on Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to show good will for substantial talks to begin to solve the Cyprus problem.

In statements on Thursday, Stylianides called on Eroglu to realize that what is urgent is not declaring deadlines but as the political leader of the Turkish Cypriot community to show good will for substantial talks to begin for a solution to the Cyprus issue.

Invited to comment on a letter which Eroglu has sent to the UN Secretary General, Stylianides said that Eroglu must realize that deadlines only destroy any effort underway by the international community which is promoting a solution for specific reasons.

“He must realize that his “Denktash” ideals are not an excuse, he must get rid of them and understand that time is against Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and against Cyprus as a whole”, Stylianides added.

Efforts are currently underway with a view to achieve an agreement between the two communities on a joint communiqué that will pave the way for the resumption of UN-led negotiations on the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island’s northern third.
