Four more Premier League sides — Southampton, West Ham, Brighton and Sheffield United — are through to the fifth round of the FA Cup, joining Wolves, after coming out on top in their respective fourth round ties on Saturday. There wasn’t an incredible amount of quality on display during Saturday’s early game at St. Mary’s Stadium, so it was perhaps fitting that the game’s only goal was scored by way of Gabriel Magalhaes putting the ball into his own net. It was Tottenham academy product Kyle Walker-Peters who provided the dangerous ball into the box, and the Brazilian defender couldn’t quite work out how to boot it clear.
West Ham United 4-0 Doncaster Rovers
Pablo Fornals gave West Ham a 1-0 lead before 120 seconds had even been played, and that was very much a sign of things to come. Andriy Yarmolenko made it 2-0 just after the half-hour mark, assisted by club-record signing Said Benrahma, before an own goal made it 3-0 in the 54th. Oladapo Afolayan added the fourth for West Ham 12 minutes from full-time, making it a debut he’ll never forget.
Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 Blackpool
Yves Bissouna scored perhaps the goal of the tournament to give Brighton a 1-0 lead just before the half-hour mark, and Steven Alzate benefitted from an impossible, slow-bouncing deflection 30 minutes later as the Seagulls dispatched League One side Blackpool at the Amex Stadium.
Sheffield United 2-1 Plymouth Argyle
After 18 games without a win to begin the season (all competitions), Sheffield United have suddenly won three of their last four, including two in the FA Cup, as they marched through to the fifth round on Saturday. Chris Basham finished a wonderfully free-flowing move six minutes before halftime and Billy Sharp rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 two minutes after the restart. Plymouth Argyle got back into the game with 15 minutes to go, but never looked like scoring an equalizer.
Chorley 0 Wolves 1
Connor Hall and sixth-tier Chorley followed the blueprint to tempt a major FA Cup upset on Friday but couldn’t score a goal in a 1-0 loss to visiting Premier League side Wolves at Victory Park.
Vitinha’s goal ultimately ushered Wolves into the fifth round after a match that felt very much even on the day. The host Magpies will actually feel quite disappointed in themselves in not finishing their chances
Swansea City 5-1 Nottingham Forest
Slick Swansea City sent Nottingham Forest crashing out of the FA Cup as two goals from Liam Cullen booked their place in the fourth round – and a possible date with Manchester City.
Chris Hughton’s side got off to the worst possible start when Wayne Routledge crossed low for Cullen despite the former Crystal Palace winger appearing to be offside in the build-up.
Forest were in second gear for much of the first half and their passiveness in attack was punished when Matt Grimes struck a fabulous second with a 25-yard drive.
After making 10 changes to the side which lost to Middlesbrough in midweek, Forest showed much more intent after the break as they looked to find chinks in Swansea’s armour.
And they duly pulled a goal back when a mesmerising run from Joe Lolley was halted by a crude challenge and while the Reds would have won a penalty, Anthony Knockaert lashed in the loose ball.
But just as Forest sensed there was a route back into the game, controversy struck when Ryan Manning was upended just outside the box, but Kevin Friend deemed it a penalty.
Matt Grimes made no mistake from the spot and it was then left to Cullen to wrap the game up when he scored from a fine move, producing an instinctive first-time finish from Manning’s low crossJoe Worrall was inches away with a header as Forest kept plugging away, but substitute Oli Cooper made it five when his low shot was saved by Smith only for it to squirm over the line.
Millwall 0-3 Bristol City
A dominant second-half performance eased Bristol City past Millwall at The Den, with a 3-0 win securing their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup for just the second time in 20 years.
The visitors took the lead against the run of play through a Famara Diedhiou penalty and despite creating a number of opportunities, Millwall were unable to get the better of Max O’Leary in the Bristol City goal.
The all-Championship encounter was effectively settled by a deflected Nahki Wells free-kick just before the hour mark, before Antoine Semenyo capped a thoroughly professional performance from Dean Holden’s side
Barnsley 1-0 Norwich City
Callum Styles gave Barnsley a deserved win over Norwich to set up a potential FA Cup fifth-round tie against Chelsea.
The midfielder struck after 56 minutes as the hosts upset the form guide to defeat the Championship leaders.
Norwich came to life late on with Przemyslaw Placheta rattling the bar before Styles made a goal-saving block to deny Emi Buendia.
Cheltenham 1 Manchester City 3
Cheltenham Town led mighty Manchester City for 22 second half minutes after Alfie May’s goal at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium.
They gave Pep Guardiola’s side an almighty scare before late goals from Phil Foden, Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres took the Premier League side into the last 16 with a 3-1 win.
Michael Duff’s side did themselves, the town and League Two a proud in front of a global audience of many millions.
May slammed into the net after a Ben Tozer throw-in was not dealt with by City in the 59th minute.
But the 2018/19 FA Cup winners scored in the 81st, 84th and 94th minute to avoid being on the receiving end of a major upset.
Manchester United 3 Liverpool 2
Manchester United added to Liverpool’s woes as Bruno Fernandes’s unstoppable late free kick earned his side a 3-2 win in a blockbuster FA Cup fourth-round clash on Sunday. The Portuguese, on as a substitute, stepped up to bend a right-footed strike beyond Alisson in the 78th minute to book a last-16 tie for his side against West Ham United.Mohamed Salah scored both of Liverpool’s goals, the first to give his side an 18th-minute lead before Mason Greenwood levelled, and then again in the 58th minute after the outstanding Marcus Rashford had slotted United ahead.
Liverpool looked the more likely winners but it was Fernandes, so often United’s spark, who sealed it with his 28th goal in all competitions for the club since his debut last February.
The tie proved an absorbing tussle, in marked contrast to the turgid 0-0 stalemate between the sides at Anfield in the Premier League last weekend.
Brentford 1 Leicester 3
Leicester’s 3-1 FA Cup win at Brentford
Leicester City’s James Maddison set up one goal and got on the scoresheet in a second-half comeback as they beat second-tier Brentford 3-1 away in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.
The Foxes will host fellow Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round.
Championship side Brentford took the lead in the seventh minute from a set piece when the ball took two deflections before Danish centre back Mads Bech Sorensen stabbed home his first goal in English football from close range.
Leicester started the second half on the front foot and equalised in the 46th minute after winning the ball upfield before Maddison found Cengiz Under in space for the Turkish winger to curl his effort past goalkeeper Luke Daniels.
Five minutes later, the visitors’ took the lead with a penalty after Youri Tielemans was fouled. The Belgium midfielder got up to send Daniels the wrong way with a low shot into the bottom corner.
Leicester wrapped up the win in the 71st on the counter-attack when Daniels spilled a Harvey Barnes shot and midfielder Maddison was on hand to score his fourth goal in as many games in all competitions.
Chelsea 3 Luton 1
Abraham hat-trick takes Chelsea into fifth round
Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham grabbed a hat-trick in a 3-1 win over second-tier Luton Town on Sunday to book the Premier League side’s place in the FA Cup fifth round.
Frank Lampard’s side will play another Championship club in the next round when they make the trip to Barnsley, who beat Norwich City 1-0 on Saturday.
Abraham’s treble was his second in a Chelsea shirt and the 23-year-old became the first Englishman since Lampard in 2007 to net one for the club in the competition.
“It’s great to score a hat-trick and win so comfortably. Luton are a good side,” England forward Abraham, who now has 11 goals this season, told the BBC.
“It’s always nice to get a win, hopefully we can build off that form now… hopefully we can build on the confidence from here.”
Chelsea took the lead in the 11th minute when a quick throw-in caught Luton’s defence napping, allowing Timo Werner to make a run down the right channel and cut the ball back for Abraham who fired a low shot past goalkeeper Simon Sluga.
Abraham doubled the lead six minutes later when he flicked a header from a Reece James cross past Sluga, whose indecisiveness after coming off the line saw him stranded in no-man’s land as the ball sailed over his head into the net.
Luton pulled one back on the half-hour mark when Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga failed to keep out Jordan Clark’s low effort which squeezed between his hand and leg into the net.
But Chelsea began to dominate in the second half and the introduction of Callum Hudson-Odoi had an instant impact as his one-two with Billy Gilmour allowed him to fire the ball into the six-yard box for Abraham to get his third with a simple tap-in.
Werner had the chance to make it 4-1 with a penalty after he was fouled by Clark but the German, who has scored one goal in his last 15 appearances, had his shot well saved by Sluga.
Fulham 0 Burnley 3
Jay Rodriguez struck twice for Burnley as they progressed through to the FA Cup fifth round thanks to a dominant 3-0 win at Fulham.
The 31-year-old had not found the net since a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on July 11, but gave his side the lead with a well-worked header just after the half-hour mark.
Rodriguez then doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 71st minute, firing down the middle from the penalty spot.
With just under 10 minutes left on the clock, Rodriguez turned provider, controlling a loose ball in the Fulham penalty area with his shoulder into the path of Kevin Long who was able to tap home and secure his side’s place in the next round to face either Bournemouth or Crawley.
Everton 3 Sheffield Wednesday 0
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his first goal since early December as Everton breezed past Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 to reach the last 16 of the FA Cup.
Carlo Ancelotti showed how seriously he is taking the competition by naming a strong side against the Sky Bet Championship strugglers and Calvert-Lewin ended his six-game goal drought with a poacher’s finish (29) to put Everton on their way.
Wednesday belied their relegation status with a lively opening 45 minutes but faded badly after the break with Richarlison (59) and Yerry Mina (62) both heading home James Rodriguez corners as Everton showed their class
Wycombe 1 Tottenham 4
Wycombe, bottom of the Championship, had stunned their Premier League opponents when Fred Onyedinma slotted in the opener midway through the first half.
But Gareth Bale marked a rare start with the equaliser just before half-time, hooking in Lucas Moura’s cross.
Tottenham upped the pressure in the second half, but Wycombe repelled numerous attacks as they looked set to take the game to extra time.
However, with Mourinho having sent on key players Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Ndombele, the away side’s quality eventually told as Winks curled home to give Spurs the lead with four minutes to go.
Ndombele ensured there would be no late drama when he finished from close range and then stabbed home a fourth in injury time to set Tottenham up with a fifth-round tie at Everton.
