Ryman League Division 1 North
21st February 2016
at Chadfields, Tilbury
Haringey Borough faced league leaders AFC Sudbury hoping to keep their unbeaten run going and with better finishing and a bit more luck would have stretched the run to six. But it wasn’t to be. With the wind at Haringey’s back in the first half, they dominated their opponents and inside two minutes should have been 1-0 up but for a very, very late flag for offside. On twelve minutes Boro’ did make it 1-0. Joshua Wilder scoring some thirty yards closer to goal than on Tuesday night versus Aveley.
Just after twenty minutes AFC had thought they had scored but the assistant ref deemed the ball hadn’t crossed the line and Ashley Harris cleared. Haringey on another day should have had at least three goals with chances being missed left, right and centre but these let offs allowed AFC to have the final word. A right wing cross wasn’t dealt with by the Boro’ defence and the ball was bundled in by AFC Sudbury’s Wales on the stroke of half time. Playing against the wind in the second half, Boro’ again pressed hard for a second goal, but after twenty five minutes AFC Sudbury struck again. A long ball wasn’t dealt with and the resulting cross was side footed in by Sudbury’s Maybanks.
Ten minutes later it was all over. The same player scoring his second and AFC Sudbury’s third. Haringey didn’t give up but were leaving gaps in defence and were nearly punished a fourth time but AFC Sudbury’s Maybanks missed his chance for a hat-trick and hit the post. Haringey did have one more go but again the chance went begging. For Forty-four minutes Haringey Borough played like they were league leaders and not AFC Sudbury and with four of the next five league games against teams below Boro a chance to clear the relegation zone completely is in Boro’s hands.
