Larnaca, Cyprus set for best summer season in decades, according to the region’s tourism board

Larnaca is having this year its best summer season in decades in terms of tourist arrivals, following the success of 2016.

According to the Larnaca Tourism Board, data from the Statistical Service show that this summer season is turning into “the best in decades” for the city and the District, with good occupancy levels across all hotels.

The same trend will continue throughout August and September, a Board announcement says.

In 2016, the Larnaca District attracted 11.4% of total tourist arrivals, the biggest share since 2001. According to estimates, results in 2017 are expected to be similar with last year’s.

Larnaca managed over the last years to attract usually between 8.2% and 10.8% of all holidaymakers arriving from abroad. Only last year, a total of 363,264 tourists chose to spend their vacations in Larnaca, out of a total of 3.1 mln holidaymakers.

All data show that estimates by hotel owners in the Larnaca District point to an even better result concerning the share of tourist arrivals for 2017, with the Board not ruling out a new record.

The increase is attributed to a greater capacity, following the construction of many city hotels in the past 3-4 years. Winter tourism and improved flight connectivity also played a key role in this outcome, says the Larnaca Tourism Board.

The city in Cyprus’ eastern coast attracts mainly tourists from the UK, Russia, Germany, Sweden, Austria and is gaining ground in tourism arrivals from Israel, Lebanon and Eastern European countries.

The Board notes finally that the District is ideal for vacations all year round, offering an array of activities planned in cooperation with various stakeholders.
