Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, has said that the Ninth Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference that began on Wednesday in Cyprus is the result of the recognition of the actions and initiatives undertaken by the Cypriot government to tackle one of the most important problems which humanity is called to address.
Speaking upon his arrival at Filoxenia Conference Centre, in Nicosia, where the Conference kicked off, Anastasiades said that this is one of the most important events, as it is the first time that it is taking place in Europe and particularly in the Mediterranean region, with the Republic of Cyprus being the hosting country.
“This is the result of the recognition of the actions and initiatives which the Cyprus government is undertaking, to tackle one of the most important problems which humanity is called to address,” he added.
Anastasiades also noted that Cyprus’ initiative to address climate change is also manifested “through a series of other initiatives as well, as is the Presidency of the UN Coordinating Committee for education, and other important initiatives as the development of positions which Ministers have adopted through our own initiative at Sharm El Sheikh, where COP27 will take place.”
He added that during the COP27 he himself and the President of Egypt will preside over a presentation of the results of hundreds of scientists who have drafted certain actions for the Eastern Mediterranean and neighbouring countries.
Asked if the Republic of Cyprus will highlight Turkey’s destabilizing role in the Eastern Mediterranean region during the first ever meeting of the European Political Community and the informal European Council meeting in Prague, Anastasiades said that this will happen in a substantiated way, “so that the things that we say will be seriously taken into consideration.”
Replying to another question he said that Cyprus is in full coordination with Greece.
