DOZENS of children from Denia primary school were moved to nearby Mammari yesterday as bomb disposal experts attempted to reach and disarm a bomb, which has been buried just 50 metres from the school since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
The bomb – reported to weigh some 700 pounds – is also only 15 metres away from the nearest house, and also 50 metres from a church.
Previous efforts to get to the bomb have failed as it’s sitting at the bottom of a buried well, according to Denia village leader Christakis Panayiotou, who said the bomb could be as much as 30 feet down.
Experts from the police and National Guard (NG) are finding it equally difficult to pinpoint the explosive, even under the guidance of a bomb specialist who has been called in from Greece.
