Patriarch Bartholomew concerned about Cyprus developments

Ecumenical Patriarch,Bartholomew said he is monitoring developments on the Cyprus problem with the utmost interest and concern.

Speaking after he met President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades at Fanari in Constantinople, he said he believes the negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus issue are on a better track than in the past.

“We wish and pray that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots live in harmony in the future. Our wishes are with you in this great effort”, he said.

On his part, President Anastasiades said that he is committed through genuine dialogue with the Turkish Cypriot leader to find a lasting and permanent solution. There is progress he said, however there are also obstacles. “My efforts concentrate on overcoming the obstacles”, he added.

The Cypriot President offered the Patriarch a copy of an icon of Panagia Kanakaria, Lythrangomi.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks resumed last year aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
