President discusses Cyprus problem, economic cooperation and energy issues with US Congress members

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, received on Saturday a delegation of US Congress members, who are in Cyprus for a two day visit.

During the meeting, the President and the members of the US Congress discussed about the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, the bilateral and economic relations between Cyprus and the United States, notably issues related to the bilateral Double Tax Agreement, the arms embargo, energy issues and wider developments in the region.

The delegation, which was accompanied by the US Ambassador to Cyprus Kathleen A. Doherty, comprises Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Republicans, Florida), Carolyn Maloney (Democrats, New York), Gas Bilirakis (Republicans, Florida) and Randy Weber (Republicans, Texas).

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May last year, with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
