President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou met with his counterparts from Germany, Croatia, Malta and the Czech Republic on the sidelines of the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held at United Nations Headquarters in New York from Monday 31 August to Wednesday, 2 September, an official press release said.
The Conference is organized by the Inter-parliamentary Union and brings together 150 Presidents of Parliaments. The opening was officiated by President of the Interparliamentary Union, Saber Chowdhury, Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon and the President of the General Assembly of the Organization, Sam Kutesa.
On the sidelines of the Conference, the President of the House of Representatives met yon Monday with the President of the German Bundestag Norbert Lammert, Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Josip Leko, Speaker of the Maltese House of Representatives Angelo Farrugia and President of the Czech Parliament Jan Hamacek.
During the meetings they discussed issues on the agenda of the Conference, especially the role of national parliaments in ensuring the success of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and exchanged views on issues of common interest.
