Russia supports Cyprus solution efforts

Russia supports efforts to solve Cyprus problem, the Russian Ambassador here Stanislav Osadchiy has pointed out, noting that if Nicosia wishes a more active involvement of Moscow in the negotiations, it should ask for it.

Speaking after a meeting with President of the movement “Citizens Alliance” George Lillikas, Osadchiy said that Russia is watching closely developments in Cyprus and supports the positions of the two communities.

“If we can contribute to the solution of the problem, we will try to do so, if it is accepted by all sides”, he said.

Asked if Russia, along with the other Permanent Members of the UN Security Council, could engage more actively in the negotiations, Osadchiy noted this is hard to say, since the issue should be first discussed in Moscow. “Of course, if there is a request by the Greek Cypriot side, we will examine it”, he concluded.

A meeting took place on the 11th of February in Nicosia between the two community leaders, namely Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, marking the resumption of the stalled UN-led peace talks. The talks were interrupted in 2012 by the Turkish side when the Republic of Cyprus assumed the EU Presidency.
