The Cypriot Government considers the upcoming visit of US Vice President Joe Biden to Cyprus as “particularly important”, since it demonstrates the enhanced interest of the United States both with regard to the Cyprus problem, as well as for the important role that Cyprus can play in the broader region.
“The Government of Cyprus welcomes the decision by the Vice President of the United States of America, Mr. Joe Biden, to pay a visit to Cyprus on 21-23 May, following an invitation by the President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Anastasiades” said the Goverment Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides in a written statement.
He added that the visit demonstrates the significant improvement in the relations of the two countries and the role the USA can play along with the EU and other friendly countries, in the new effort to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.
According to the Government, during the talks that will take place between the Government of Cyprus and the Vice President of the United States of America, there will be discussions on the developments on the Cyprus problem, Energy, the Economy, the strategic role of Cyprus in the area of the Eastern Mediterranean, the developments in Ukraine, as well as other issues of mutual interest.
Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The leaders of the two communities agreed in February on a joint declaration which paved the way for the UN-backed talks to resume with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof.
