Three ancient tombs of archaeological importance found near Limassol

Three ancient tombs, of the post Hellenistic period, were found in an area in the Limassol district.

Archaeologists from the Archaeological Department of the Republic of Cyprus have said that the tombs include important personal objects and skeletons.

Yiannis Violaris, from the Archaeological department of the Limassol District, said that the Department was informed last night by the police that ancient tombs were found during excavation work in a plot.

“First indications of the excavations which will continue for the next two to three days, is that there are three large carved burial chambers, which are believed to be unopened, and so far we have identified seven human skeletons, amphoras of various sizes and other offerings”, he said.

He added that it is “a very interesting archaeological area”, noting that in the area there are several ancient monuments, which could be linked to the tombs.
