A Tottenham teenager has been found guilty of attempted murder after stabbing a man in an unprovoked attack.
Jonathan Kaggwa, 18 (17.09.96) of Tiverton Road, was found guilty of attempted murder and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 4 September.
On Wednesday, 18 February at around 00:30hrs, officers were on routine patrol in Ida Road, Tottenham when they spotted a disturbance and saw a man being stabbed.
Kaggwa ran off along Alexandra Road. Officers chased and detained him in North Grove.
Kaggwa was found in possession of a large hunting style knife with a foot long blade that was still dripping with blood. Kaggwa was searched and another large kitchen knife was found concealed under his jacket. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.
At the scene of the assault, a 21-year-old man was found with three serious stab wounds to his body. He was bleeding heavily and slipping in and out of consciousness. Officers gave first aid until the arrival of London’s Air Ambulance which took the victim to the Royal London Hospital where he underwent life-saving surgery. He was in hospital several days before being released and has now recovered from his injuries.
Kaggwa was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and charged on Wednesday, 18 February.
The man that had been stabbed was unwilling to support the prosecution but the case went ahead without him.
During the trial, Kaggwa gave a defence that he had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. He claimed he had seen the actual attacker run past and toss the knife towards him which he picked up, leading to him being wrongly arrested. The jury did not believe his account and he was found guilty.
He will be sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 2 October.
Detective Constable Stephen Bent from Haringey CID said: “This was an extremely violent attack in which Kaggwa stabbed a man several times. The injured man did not wish to assist with the investigation, however, there was enough evidence to proceed with a prosecution.
“I am pleased that this dangerous young man has been found guilty. We are determined to bring all offenders of violent assaults to justice.”
