Turkey will once again have to answer to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe regarding its failure to implement final judgements of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), in cases concerning the Republic of Cyprus.
CNA sources said that from June 3 to 5, when the Committee of Ministers will be meeting to discuss the implementation by member states of ECHR decisions, the issue of Turkey`s stance towards various cases will be raised.
In the first case of Cyprus v. Turkey, the latter was convicted for a series of violations of human rights in the northern part of Cyprus, during and after the 1974 Turkish invasion.
In the second case of Varnavas and others v. Turkey, the latter was convicted for the absence of an effective investigation concerning the fate of nine Greek Cypriots who were missing since the Turkish invasion.
Furthermore, in the third case of Xenides-Aresti v. Turkey, the latter was convicted for denying access of the applicant to her property in the northern part of Cyprus, and the ultimate loss of control over her property.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
