Turkish Cypriot leader Akinci says “Our Concience is clear”

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci said his conscience is clear that he did everything he could for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Speaking to journalists in Crans-Montana where the Conference on Cyprus was being held, he said: “I would have loved to give you the news of a solution today. We did everything we could. Our conscience is clear.”

Akinci implied that the offer of a rotating presidency from the Greek Cypriot side was too little, too late, and that their demands on territory and guarantees were too rigid.

He said: “Regarding the rotating presidency which Guterres included in his package, the Greek Cypriot side in their initial proposals on Monday said they were against the notion of a rotating presidency. Then gradually they came to a point where they could accept it.”“But only in return of a map of their choice and zero troops, zero guarantees,” Akinci added.

Akinci further revealed that the initial map proposed by the Greek Cypriot side included villages Kythrea and Ayios Sergios, before finally accepting the Annan plan in the final minutes of the last meeting at the conference.

“An outcome where both sides would win was possible. We came so close. But it ended where both sides lose,” Akinci said.
