Two Fresh Productions launch distribution company and acquire Greek film ‘Stelios’
The team behind the production and release of THE DIVIDED ISLAND, a documentary about the Cyprus problem which released in cinemas November 2024, aim to bring both productions and acquired product to the UK market.
Enfield based Turkish Cypriot Cey Sesiguzel and Greek Cypriot Andreas Tokkallos are joined by industry film distribution veteran Lucy Savage, (Pathe, Studio Canal, Kaleidoscope and more recently Film Soho). Together they will acquire films from and about the Mediterranean.
Their first acquisition is Greek film STELIOS which broke box office records when released in Greece on December 19, 2024. STELIOS, directed by Yorgos Tsemberopoulos and produced by Tanweer Productions, tells the story of Greek music legend and singer, Stelios Kazantzidis. Lead singer of the band Melisses, Christos Mastoras, is in the lead role. As of January 2025, ticket sales have surpassed 800,000 admissions, making the film the 4th highest grossing Greek film in history.
The team at Two Fresh Distribution stated, “Greeks have been lining up outside movie theatres to watch the film on the life and career of this beloved singer admired by older and younger generations alike. We are very excited to share this important and wonderful film to the wide Greek diaspora here in the UK, where we think it will be equally as successful.”
They added, “Being of Cypriot heritage, we have always cherished and celebrated the rich tapestry of our culture, shaped by diverse Mediterranean influences that have left a lasting impact on us. Our mission is to showcase the incredible talent and stories emerging from the Mediterranean and shine a spotlight on its vibrant and dynamic film industry.”
“We’re very excited for the UK release of STELIOS not only for the Greek diaspora but for ethnic communities who know and love Stelios Kazantzidis’ music, which was translated in many languages including Turkish, Arabic and Hebrew”, said Aruzia Khan, Senior Vice President of Tanweer.
“I love the quote from the late Frank Sinatra who said, ‘If Stelios Kazantzidis was in the United States, he would have a bigger career than me.’”
