Two fully-funded PhD scholarships are being offered by the University of Coventry, which will give priority to researchers speaking both ‘Cypriot Greek’ and English, it said.
The PhD projects are on domestic violence in small societies and the other on children’s forensic interviews. Candidates must have a background in psychology, social sciences, physics and programming.
“It’s a rare and exciting opportunity,” said Dr Marilena Kyriakidou, research fellow at the university who will also be the supervisor of the two PhD projects.
According to Kyriakidou, knowledge of Cypriot Greek is essential as the data that will be processed for the two projects, may be given by the Cyprus police and the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family.
The requirement for Cypriot Greek is called for because testimonies pertaining to the cases taken by police and the association would be have been transcribed word for word in the Cypriot dialect for the most part.
“Candidates for the PhD on domestic violence must have a background in sociology, psychology and knowledge of statistical analysis, while candidates for the PhD on combining programming, physics and children’s forensic interviews must have a background in programming, machine learning and psychology,” she said.
Interested graduates need to submit a research proposal with their application, which will be evaluated and the best proposal will receive one of the three-year scholarships, which covers tuition fees and offers an annual bursary of £14,000 (€19,000).
“For the domestic violence project, candidates will compete between them, and the best proposal will receive the scholarship, while candidates for the children’s forensic interviews project will compete with candidates of other proposed PhD projects,” Kyriakidou said.
