UK Liberal Democrats condemn Turkey’s illegal actions in the Cypriot EEZ

UK Liberal Democrats have condemned Turkey’s “illegal” and “aggressive” actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus.

In a statement, published through the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, the party’s Brexit and International Development spokesperson, Tom Brake, said that “illegal actions taken by Turkey in the Republic of Cyprus should be met with concern and condemned.

“Actions taken to inflame tensions are reprehensible and it is important that the international community supports Cyprus’ sovereignty and ensures that international law is upheld. The UK government must make firm representations to its Turkish counterparts about Turkey’s aggressive act,” he added.

In violation of the European and international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Turkish warships blocked, in February this year, a drillship commissioned by Italian energy company ENI, in its attempt to reach block 3, within Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
