The support of the UK, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, in our efforts to restart and effectively conclude the negotiations for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem carries decisive weight, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said on Wednesday, addressing a reception at the British High Commisonner Ric Todd`s recidence in Nicosia, in the framework of the celebrations for the Queen`s Birthday.
According to a press release issued by the High Commission on Thursday, Kasoulides said that the UK is a partner of key importance for Cyprus, bilaterally, as well as in the Commonwealth and the EU, where “we share similar approaches on various issues”.
“It is often said that Cyprus and the UK are linked with historical, political and cultural ties since the 12th Century, when Richard the Lionheart came to Cyprus. I`m happy to say that since last year, with President`s Anastasiades official visit to London and the Joint Communiqué issued on that occasion, we have set new grounds to a very dynamic cooperation, with practical deliverables,” the Foreign Minister noted.
He pointed out that the bilateral relation “has indeed entered a new constructive phase, with concrete and effective cooperation of pragmatic value, in various crucial fields of shared interest, as in tackling regional challenges and addressing security threats and the rise of terrorism”. He reiterated the readiness of the Republic of Cyprus “to enhance this cooperation, by promoting the shared goal of stability in the region”.
“Also, our coordination with the British bases, on the basis of complementarity, is of central importance. We are in the same strategic boat”, he added.
According to the press release distinguished guests had the opportunity “to enjoy a party inspired by the UK participation at the World Expo 2015 in Milan under the title `Grown in Britain and Northern Ireland`. Designed by award-winning UK artist Wolfgang Buttress, the UK Pavilion is expected to attract millions of visitors, offering a unique visitor journey with exciting UK themed business and cultural events,” it added.
“Led by UK Trade & Investment, the UK will showcase British innovation, creativity and global leadership in key sectors of agri-tech, creative industries, food and drink, healthcare, life sciences and technology, as well as areas of business, culture, international development and science, policy and research,” the press rlease noted.
