Under capacity primary and secondary schools in Islington

All of Islington’s 54 state schools are operating below their capacity – and two have already been earmarked for closure this year.

Local authorities have cited a lack of affordable family housing, Brexit and the cost of living as contributing factors.

Figures obtained by the Gazette show that across Islington, all 54 state-run schools are under capacity, some worse than others.

Islington Council’s executive committee voted in April to close St Jude and St Paul’s CofE Primary and Highbury Quadrant Primary School this summer.

Highbury Quadrant meanwhile had 246 unfilled places where the total capacity was 420 spaces.

St Aloysius RC College, in Archway, currently has the biggest shortfall in the borough with 757 available spaces. It has only 393 pupils when it could take 1,150.

Beacon High has nearly a 50% (418) shortfall, with only 422 pupils for 840 places.

City of London Academy in Highbury Grove is 269 under capacity. It has 1,350 places, but only 1,081 pupils on the roll.

Pooles Park Primary School, in Finsbury Park, has a capacity of 450, but only 133 pupils – a shortfall of 317 or 70%.
